Thread: Filler Words

  1. Tickets Filler Words

Should you stop saying ‘um’? Here’s what experts said

... habit of throwing in a quick “you know, like” or “so like” in between every few sentences.

Those are called “filler words,” which are defined as words, sounds or phrases that we use, often unintentionally, to fill pauses when we don’t know what to say.

I use them so often that I don’t process how many times I’m saying them. In fact, most of us probably aren’t counting the amount of filler words we use in a sentence

"You know" No I didn't know, I'm still not sure I know.

    I don’t know either . . .

The worst is cnn, when they make a lame point and follow it up with...., right?

    They get nothing right.
But on a lighter note, remember when CNN used to have the most scores on their ticker, those were the days.

You can make whole sentences with them:

At the end of the day, he really brings that to the table.

When I give technical talks or presentations, I specifically caution against using these phrases. CMD makes me cringe when he gives interviews(which I have stated before on RP). I conduct a (after action review) on myself by asking trusted people if I said those “ums”, etc in my talk. Filler words make you sound stupid. I learned to pause in silence, gather my thoughts then speak.

Um, you know, like I was saying, in other words, it's like, UM. You know?

No matter how much knowledge a person has on a subject, filler words automatically limit your ability to teach the hearer.

    Amen.

When I pose a question to our group, I’m in your corner. I’ll wait patiently for someone in the group to speak and then interject as needed.

    Silence is your friend.

You’d think with NIL and athletes branding themselves ( Hello SP “World Wide Privacy Tour”), emphasis on public speaking courses would be booming.

Well, uh, you know, the end result, uh, desired is, uh, play pro ball. Uh yeah.

I must give credit to Bill Davis. He always seemed calm yet ready in front of a camera.

4 years ago Des was an absolutely terrible public speaker. Today he is still terrible. After 4 years you'd think he would have cleaned up the dozens of "um" "you know" from his public speaking in every press conference.

It speaks poorly of him the inability over 4 years
to learn, adapt and overcome his non stop use of filler noise from public speaking.

Des has said he doesn’t care what anyone thinks. This is clear and part of the reason for low attendance.
