Thread: Why Every G5 Team Deserves a CFP Shot!

Default Why Every G5 Team Deserves a CFP Shot!

If you compete in Division I-A, you have a pathway to the national championship. Baseball, soccer, volleyball, track etc. your conference affiliation doesn’t block access.

Lets list all the sports that have a pathway to national championship for every team if you play in that division !

    • Basketball (Men’s & Women’s)
    • Baseball
    • Softball
    • Soccer (Men’s & Women’s)
    • Volleyball (Men’s & Women’s, plus Women’s Beach Volleyball)
    • Lacrosse (Men’s & Women’s)
    • Ice Hockey (Men’s & Women’s)
    • Water Polo (Men’s & Women’s)
    • Field Hockey (Women’s)
    • Rowing (Women’s)

    • Cross Country (Men’s & Women’s)
    • Indoor Track & Field (Men’s & Women’s)
    • Outdoor Track & Field (Men’s & Women’s)
    • Swimming & Diving (Men’s & Women’s)
    • Tennis (Men’s & Women’s)
    • Golf (Men’s & Women’s)
    • Wrestling (Men’s)
    • Gymnastics (Men’s & Women’s)
    • Fencing (Men’s & Women’s)
    • Rifle (Co-ed)
    • Bowling (Women’s)
    • Skiing (Co-ed)
    • Equestrian (Women’s)

Here are the major varsity-level sports where the NCAA does not run the championship, but every Division I program still has a route to a national title:

    Sport Governing Body Championship Pathway

Men’s Rowing Intercollegiate Rowing Association (IRA) IRA National Championship

    Regatta (all varsity programs eligible)
Squash (M/W) College Squash Association (CSA) CSA National Championships (team and individual titles)

Sailing (Co-ed) Intercollegiate Sailing Association (ICSA) ICSA National Championships (fleet racing, team racing, match racing)

Rugby (M/W) USA Rugby / NCR (National Collegiate Rugby) Collegiate Rugby Championships (15s and 7s formats)

Equestrian (W) National Collegiate Equestrian Association (NCEA) NCEA National Championship

Acrobatics & Tumbling (W) National Collegiate Acrobatics & Tumbling Association (NCATA) NCATA National Championship
    Other Club-Variety Sports NCRHA (
roller hockey), ACHA (club ice hockey), etc. National championships recognized within their governing bodies

Did I leave a sport out? So why should FBS football be different?

They'll still have a shot for legal reasons, but they're going to axe the auto-bids in favor of a BCS style committee vote where they hand pick the teams

It will still be possible for UL to get in as long as they:

    1. Go undefeated

    2. Beat one or more quality P4 teams

    3. Win the Sunbelt in a year where there are several quality teams on our schedule

    4. Make sure that our gettng in does not force out a popular powerhouse -- Texas, ND, etc.

Football has the most attention on it so that's the main target, but just like how the money has trickled down into diamond and even less popular sports, the "G6 cant compete at this level" attitude will eventually consume the other sports as well. Thr best evidence of this is just how rapidly our baseball/softball teams have gone from title contenders to tournament berth hopefuls

    Great post/thread.

Can i take it ip a notch.... maybe nobody should even be considered p4 or g5. Either you are fbs or you arent.

And maybe, just maybe, schools should not be able to pick their own conferences....did the yankees recruit the red sox to join al east? Did dodgers ever try to kick rockies our of nl west and replace with cardinals...nope.

Redo all the conferences, let ncaa set it, maybe even draw lotto balls

The NCAA needs to step up. Many years ago, the NIT was the big tournament for basketball. The CFP is the NIT. The NCAA needs to make a 1A Championship Tournament. All conference champions get invite plus some at-large bids. The rich snobs will reject it to keep their NIT. The rest of us will compete for an NCAA National Championship.

Have the sunbelt onference do away with title game, declare the champ earlier, have time to lobby for them and increase that ranking, and dont risk a slip up in title game

I know I am preaching to the choir, but If they did that, then what is the purpose of winning your conference and conference championship games?

In College its all about winning your conference!

    Its label under skiing lol,

If auto-bids are gone, then what’s the point of winning your conference or playing a title game? College sports have always been about earning your shot by winning your league. If they insist on a committee, at least give G5 the old system where they match 1 and 2, in a play‑in game for an auto‑bid to the CFP?

I agree that the term P4 or G5 should not be a thing! We are Division I-A

    Historically? Sure.

In this century? In college its all about making money, and UL being in the playoff instead of ND or Texas is a huge net negative in the profit margin

I have sympathy for Texas but none for Notre Dame

Notre Dame has a long history of opting out when things are not in their favor.

In 43 they refused to play Louisiana when they knew they would lose.

AND they've opted out from bowl play before there was a profitable playoff.
