Believe it or not people once played sports for the love of the game.

Then along came "everyone gets a trophy" and the era of "I need compensation to participate" began.

Brooks' selection process was a 300-question psychological test that would give him insight on how every player would react under stress; anyone who refused to take the test would automatically fail.

The funding challenges for the 1980 "Miracle on Ice" U.S. Olympic hockey team were severe, largely due to the amateur status of the players and the limited financial support for USA Hockey at the time. The team, coached by Herb Brooks, had to raise its own funds to operate during a grueling 7-month training period.
    Key Funding and Financial Challenges:
Intense Fundraising Demands: The team was based in St. Paul, Minnesota, but played only 10 games locally, with 50 games played away, heavily relying on exhibition games to raise money.
Amateur Status: Unlike the state-sponsored Soviet team, the U.S. roster consisted of college students who were not permitted to play in the NHL, meaning they lacked significant sponsorships or professional salaries during their preparation.
Player Sacrifice: Players faced personal financial pressures; for example, goaltender Jim Craig had to forego an immediate, financially lucrative NHL contract to fulfill his promise to his late mother to play in the Olympics.
Logistical Costs: The team had to sustain themselves throughout a rigorous, year-long training regimen to prepare for the Soviet juggernaut.

And the "lack of NIL" connection is????

The players got lots of NIL where it belonged. AFTER the Olympics.

They made money via appearance commission post Olympics.

For a modest fee I met with Bill Baker at an.Astros game. I took a picture with him with me wearing his gold medal

    From Jamarcus Fitzpatrick:

Ragin’ Cajuns Football running back Hutch Swilley will enter his name into the transfer portal.

The St. Thomas More product did not log a carry in his two seasons at UL

With his announcement, the Cajuns have 3 backs out of the room:

    -Bill Davis
    -Zylan Perry
    -Hutch Swilley

    Next season they’ll have:

    -Steven Blanco
    -Darrell Smith
    -JJ Garner
    -Ke'Rynn Smith (Holy Cross)

I didn't really get that one. He's losing the top 2 backs and I've heard its possible to lose Blanco too. Where is he going to go, outside of FCS, where he will be given a better chance to get in the rotation? It's not exactly like there's a lot of film on him for a school to make a decision.

So we could promise to pay them after each win

Maybe given he hasn’t seen the field, maybe he’s being honest with himself.

But then again, staff did a “fantastic” job evaluating QBs last off season.

Dude, come on. Where else is he going to be given the chance to compete for a top rotation spot at a mid major school in his backyard? He obviously feels he can play at this level so why not stay and compete?
