Not sure why Shaw is no longer in catholic league, they probably shouldnt be in finals anyway, as they wouldnt beat most of the catholic league teams

Shaw’s enrollment has them in 4A.

We did. It's the wildest finish I've seen in my years of calling high school football.

As soon as Shaw's center took off his helmet, I knew what was going to happen. What surprised me was how long it took the Lafayette officiating crew working the game to throw the flag. It appeared as if they were avoiding calling the unsportsmanlike conduct penalty. It wasn't until St. Charles coach Wayne Stein called a timeout and lobbied for the penalty that the white hat convened his crew and hesitantly tossed the marker. Because the UC was a dead-ball foul, it gave St. Charles the timeout back, allowing them to force Shaw to punt. The punt was shanked and, on replay, appeared to be partially blocked. At that point, I knew Shaw had blown the game.

All-in-all, this may have been the best and most competitive Prep Classic in a long time. All of the games (except the Riverside/Ascension Catholic and the St. Aug/Karr games) were competitive and went down to the wire.

Congrats to former Cajuns rb Wayne Stein . He’s had a nice run at his high school Alma mater

Vero Beach had a 8 point lead with 1:18 seconds left and the football. Vero Beach kneels on 3 straight plays then, on 4th down, retreats into the end zone to give up a safety and 2 points. Now a 6 point lead but Vero Beach has to kick off to Lake Mary. The rest is history. Playing not to lose will get you beat.

To quote one of their coaches: they’d get killed in the Catholic League. They’re content playing 4A ball.

Not sure i agree with giving a coach a timeout back just because of a penalty.... either he called a timeout or he didnt. Even if other circumstances ensued he still called it first... not saying ref is wrong in giving it back, rule should be changed

By rule, the officials were obligated to give the timeout back because the dead ball foul would have automatically stopped the clock. St. Charles would not have called the timeout had the flag been thrown.

It’s not the first time I’ve seen that rule applied, but it is the first time I saw it applied in a state title game.

Yep. Although Tierney has greatly improved the team since he’s been back, Shaw today doesn’t have the talent (or enrollment) of Shaw in the 90’s. In 97 for example, Shaw had 11-12 D1 signees . They were loaded during tierneys first stint there

Shaw dropped out of the Catholic League years ago due to decreased enrollment. They and DeLaSalle dropped out around the same time.
