In 1989 independents not only had best bowl record, most bowl teams, but also finished #1,2 and 3 in poll rankings

NIL replaced the “bag man” when the Supreme Court said that every athlete had a constitutional right to mine their Name, Image and Likeness

The big boys paid players illegally before that and used the “bag man” to do so.

Once the Supreme Court made it legal to pay players NIL the door was opened and made it so much easier for the big boys now it is even harder for the little guys to compete - then with the simultaneous abolition of the transfer sit out requirements (because it was apparent from the Supreme Courts NIL decision that sit out rules would also be unconstitutional as an infringement upon the athletes right to mine it’s NIL) - that set back the little guy even more because now the athletes don’t have to sit upon transfer

So, NONE of this was the doings of politicians or the big boys but was totally the recognition of rights of every athlete under the US Constitution by the US Supreme Court - any other BS analysis of this area is pure BS . . .

Yes, that is the "legal" reason given on why NIL was created, but we all know it was to benefit the people who have the money who didn't like that the playing fields were getting to equal between the haves and have nots.
