The P4's needed NIL to try and stay at the top. I'll do my best to state my point.
At one point in NCAA college football, there were the elite and not so elite. The elite have always beat there chest to say they were the best and that was the way life was. But there were no lines drawn in the sand to establish who was in the elite group and who wasn't.
Around 1990, there was a rift in the NCAA football world (Two schools were claiming they had won the national title) that established "the five best conferences" and the rest. This was just a way for the "elite" schools to let everyone else know they were elite. However, the not so elite began to catch up again so that the elite wasn't so elite anymore....
Fast forward to 2000's.....The P5's were not at glorious as they once were. Again, to separate themselves again, NIL was created. The haves do not like having to share anything with the have nots. NIL was created to give the P5's, now P4's, the chance to pull ahead again. I know every school can use NIL, but only the super rich can really take advantage of NIL.
I hope my point came across, because I don't express my thoughts as eloquently as some of you on RP. I was listening to a sports talk show (relatively local) and he was _____ing about 2 G5's in the playoff system. He would prefer any SEC school, even the worse in the conference, to be in the playoffs over any G5's.
