How did JMU rise so quickly? JMU has an athletic budget of $68m and $53m came from student fees. That is 78%, an extremely high percentage. For Fall 2025, James Madison University (JMU) planned for an undergraduate enrollment of around 21,358 and a total enrollment of approximately 23,157 students. That is over $1,200 per student per semester or over $2,450 per year. That's almost $10,000 over a 4 year period. Yet enrollment is up every year. JMU's student athletic fees tops all public schools in the country.
Sounds like UL could learn from JMU and institute a modest student athletics fee.
Except it would be required to pass a student vote. Good luck with that.
Not saying we shouldn't try, but right now with the $25 Million budget deficit issue the media and others jumped all over the past couple months, blaming football and athletics almost solely, now might be about the worst timing imaginable to put something like that on a ballot.
