Academically, we are the only R1 school in the ULS. But, we don't have a Med school, a Law school, a Dental School or a Vet school. LSU has all of these and has been deemed the Flagship of the State of Louisiana. This is also why LSU has so much professional financial support while UL has mostly small donors. Our only hope is that the ULS, which is larger than the LSU System, demands its own Flagship and LSU remains only the Flagship of the LSU System. Is Southern University considered the Flagship of its System? It at least has its own Law school.
Just a quick search of athletic events that we have played in the last year and here are the schools that athletically call us Louisiana on there website:
LSU-Alexandria
Nicholls
Grambling
Southern
UNO
I know it is small steps, but ULM, La Tech, LSU, McNeese, Nw State, SLU and Tulane are the ones that either call us ULL or UL-Lafayette or Louisiana-Lafayette on their athletic website.
I don’t think we, or anyone else, will ever be considered a flagship school in the ULS system. The perception among other schools and fans is that we’re trying to claim that status, and that perception is the reason they will never use the Louisiana name. Technically we are not, but they will never use that because that would legitimize us as such, and Louisiana.
We could be Ivy League they still would not acknowledge it.
the flagship status can only be ordained and Huey P Long is gone, after all that is how LSU A&M BR got the designation
