Erath played 1-8 Bogalusa tonight. It was 50-0 in the 2nd Q. They had like 2 people in the stands. Those poor kids have a 4 hour bus ride home tonight.
WHY ???

Are we that good?
Why? Because decades ago, even prior to the public/private fight, only two teams from each district made the playoffs. And the bracket was set year after year. The complaints were of two positions. District X would be really bad, drew District Y, pretty much guaranteed the same leagues advanced and stayed home annually. The two points were the weak league complained, wanting to have a chance. And all the other districts wanted a shot at an easy playoff district. Also some great teams sat home even finishing 9-1.
So the LHSAA in their infinite wisdom add “wild cards”, based on an algorithm to make a 32 team bracket. Of course, still complaining in sued, that it wasn’t fair.
Then the public/private split started brewing and evolved to where we are today. 8 “championships”. A few years ago a 0-10 team made the playoffs. Really!?!?!
Why? Parents started this. My kid is a winner, need that coke and trophy. Now today you have brackets with byes at pretty much every level.
But most importantly, every game has a paid gate. There is some revenue going to LHSAA at every game. The second reason. Follow the money. That genie will be hard to stuff back in the bottle.
Blame people like the former principal of Iota High, who went around crying after their girls basketball team lost the state championship game to a private school.
Nevermind that Iota program was ranked Top 20 in the country just a couple years back and won, I think, back to back state championships. But he wasn’t principal then, and he needed a banner to hang for his tenure, as his ego dictated.
He started writing letters all over the state.
There were other principals across the state, but he’s the outspoken one I remember who really had one of the most BS arguments.
The mere fact that a 1-8 football team can still make the playoffs ought to tell anyone with half a brain how idiotic the current system is. If the LHSAA is going to keep the same split format, then they need to reduce the number of playoff slots.
Georgia just went down from 7A back to 6A, i think florida is decreasing next year or maybe this year.
