I just hope Coach Q’s pass here is not started immediately after Coach M’s crucifixion no matter how long it took to crucify coach M . . .

One game in..... and the overreactions have already started
not sure if you were around back then but the Princeton offense that Joe Scott ran at Denver with a bunch of whities was pretty fun to watch. They weren't very great though. I really miss the days of backdoor screens. I watched a lot of basketball throughout the day on Monday and I didn't see one. Maybe I wasn't watching hard enough.
Teams who have good guard play can be very successful with the concept of penetration then kick out for an open 3. You need to have a guard who is quick enough to penetrate and who can finish at the rim. When this happens, you also get to line often due to the threat of finishing at the rim. We have not had that in the last couple of years which is why we don't get many free throws. Elfrid Payton was great at this--he is also in the top 10 for free throw attempts at UL. Jay Wright was also very effective at this. I did not see guard quickness offensively in Monday's game--very small sample size but hopefully we have a better showing in the future. If you can't penetrate, you need to have half court sets that can get open looks for your shooters--We did not have many open looks on Monday.
Houston’s offense is similar to what you saw the Cajuns employ Monday night. You probably will see similar things throughout the year in the half court. In fact most basketball teams do similar things at all levels today. Difference is the Cougars are ELITE defensively and on the glass. I typed that word in caps to indicate how few teams match them in that regard. That allows them to score transition buckets after forced turnovers and on second shots. Those factors mask the offensive struggles at times. Monday night we had more turnovers and fewer rebounds than our opponent. That can not continue if we expect to have success.
I mentioned earlier in this thread how much UH has improved on offense, particularly shooting. We were talking perimeter shooting but I didn't realize that UH was percentage wise one of the top 3 pt shooting teams in the country last year. They hit 39% as a team! No team shot 40% so that puts them at the top. They also shot only 20 3's per game so they took shots that were there but they didn't seem to force them up like we do. We need to become better at creating better shot opportunities whether that's from the perimeter or getting into the lane.
