Thread: Far too much being made of UL's current plan at quarterback

  1. UL Football Far too much being made of UL's current plan at quarterback

Other than maybe the head coach, no part of football is the source of more discussion, controversy and angst than the quarterback position.

With the UL Ragin’ Cajuns in recent years, it’s impossible not to discuss the quarterback position because three different quarterbacks have played in each of the past four seasons because of injuries.

"First of all, there’s zero evidence this offense has had any rhythm all season long that would be disrupted by one play or series."

Come on with this. It sure doesn't help with rhythm.

I'm not blaming him, but in the last 2 games, Howard has been sent out by the staff cold and given up a 10 point swing. Sure, our offense may have punted on those possessions if not for the interceptions. Lunch may have thrown a pick. But, those drives gave USM a TD lead instead of 3 at the half and swung momentum. It also tied the game for Troy and they took the momentum.

Yes, this even with all with the injuries. Can't be discounted. However, you can't say that too much is being made out of those decisions. UL players even came out a few years ago saying that when you put in a new QB, simple stuff like the spiral make a difference catching a football. Ball placement. Left-handed vs. right-handed. A drop that could be a catch hurts the rhythm.

There are countless examples of the Des tenure were rotating 2 QBs (outside of 1 play short yardage) has backfired. We kill our own momentum when we get it and that does not help with injuries and all the other stuff that are reasons this team is struggling.

At this point in the season, we need to see what we have with Walker. Lunch albeit has done well running the ball, outside of the Marshall game..has not thrown the ball well. I believe des wants to keep Lunch as QB1 right now due to oline being so banged up, you need the running option that lunch gives you.

Maybe we need to look in the direction of the Strength and Conditioning coaches. We have had Turf that predated our current coach, Dez, so its not the turf. Not all injuries, but many injuries happen because of athletes or fans even, not being in the condition they should be in. Not looking at just conditioning like wind sprints, or weight room typical conditioning, BUT strengthening the athletes stabilization muscles/ligaments. Ones core and their joint stabilization muscles are key areas to condition at any age. Linemen, receivers, defensive backs, are out due to injuries. How many of our athletes are out due to lack of preseason conditioning of joint stabilization muscles and core muscle groups. Not sure, and this may not be the only issue adding up to our football team record. I think it is one of the main reasons we are playing without so many players at this season.

New turf went in OLOL stadium just prior to the start of this season.

The article is wrong, it's correct to scrutinize the QB position until we actually have somebody that can play at a high level and lead the team. We do not have that now.

Injury wise, is the new turf tougher on players than the old turf?

2 things can be true at the same time. Yes, we do need more consistent play at QB. We also have other issues that Kevin highlighted in his article. The OL injuries are somewhat beyond our control. However the very poor play be the defense in third down situations last week was very disappointing. They just could not get off the field when needed. Improvement there is what I will be looking for this Saturday.

Inserting Johnny Walker Red Zone when Sir Lunch a Lot was scoring on back to back drives disrupted this whole season.
