Thread: Why does attendance suffer with college students?

UL Football Why does attendance suffer with college students?

The 21 year old drinking age may be one of the main reasons attendnace is down and college just doesnt seem as much fun.

Too hard to break down who is 21 and who isnt. You penalize students in essence by moving through school too fast.

Was easier for us when all were 18, all even. School id in essence was a bar id. Not sure the answer, but maybe an exemption for college students to allow drinking at 18, if going to college is deemed as a govt goal. Used to be that way in military, some places mikitary could drink at 18 when civilians had to be 21.... not anymore, but just a thought. Grabted having students drink is counter to all the other goals a univ may have, but initial q was football attendance, lol

Almost more info about student tickets at this p4 than we have about any topic....

    https://thegeorgiabulldogclub.com/po...udent-tickets/

The secret seems to be early deadlines. Get the students to lock in, while they are excited at orientation and mommy or daddy is there with the money???

Although our problem is attendance itself, not necessarily any revenue students would generate.
You have to make them feel like it is limited and not enough spots i suppose

The exact number of student tickets for Duke men's basketball games is not publicly stated, but it is a large portion of the 9,314-seat Cameron Indoor Stadium capacity, with students acquiring them through a point-based lottery system and the "campout" tradition. The majority of students get tickets this way, and a specific number is allocated, though it's unknown.

In my time (03-08) they used to basically quarantine students on McKinley Street or Gen Mouton.

Every night there were cops posted at the beginning of the street, and then again at the Jefferson intersection. As long as you weren't a complete idiot they would leave you alone. Students had strength in numbers -- there was no way the cops could arrest 3000 people every night, they were just there to monitor for extreme situations.

Then MADD and some other groups paired up with local news and started running a bunch of campaigns about underage drinking and accusing the university for 'promoting it'. Bars started getting raided every other week. People (especially underclassmen girls) stopped showing up, and the un-arrestable mob turned into a few hundred people waiting to get put in the back of a squad car.

I've asked some friends' kids about UL's party/bar scene and they laughed me out the room. Basically just a bunch of 18-20 year olds getting high on vape pens at home and watching Netflix. The few who do want to tailgate for college football they drive to BR.

Thats why when people say "we need to get the students back to the games", I always wonder how many students are actually available to try and market to. I don't think we have a very large number of your stereotypical student sports fans.

They said they wanted to curb underage student drinking and, by proxy, overall student partying.. Well, they succeeded, and there's no place where thats more evident than at football tailgates and games. UL was known as a party school for decades, and we would have friends visit from Alexandria, Ruston, Monroe, etc and more than a few transfered her after experiencing the party.

Now there is no party. They have no identity. They managed to get themselves downgraded into the list of boring directional schools that aren't LSU. In the eyes of perspective freshman, UL is now LA Tech South.

1). The campus is a ghost town from mid Friday afternoon to Sunday afternoon.. The students go home on weekends. I see the Exodus every Friday afternoon . It is difficult for me to get out of my driveway. The off campus apartment complexes are pretty empty too.

2). The students that stay are probably working weekends to help pay for school and "stuff". Things are expensive now in case you haven't noticed.

3). There is no food service on weekends which is probably another driver for no students on weekends. .

Things are certainly different now on weekends. You can shoot a cannon down the boulevard from university to St Mary and not hit anything.

I wonder if an athletic fee were charged to students like many universities do, would they be more compelled to attend athletic events since they paid for them or would it not matter to them as just another fee paid at the beginning of the semester?

Facts. The strip became a ghost town once the 21 year old drinking enforcement began

Our admin starts off with mixed messaging at orientation with ULL/UL. Hard to take something seriously when the message is not on point.

So afraid of the “law” with no teeth.

I would bet that the majority of UL students have absolutely no idea what they pay for anything. Just charge it to TOPS and then stuff the rest on a loan and I'll deal with it in a few years.

Which is why I think we should have always had an athletic fee anyway.. Only a handful of student government types are going to have a problem with it.

How do we get the Strip to CF. It's almost mythical to kids these days. Thave Absolutely no idea.

We get the Strip inside the swamp in Any form and it would be a transfer portal from driving up to BR to the Strip. LSU came to UL to party Every wknd.
