On getaway day it was Louisiana that broke free from UALR early scoring 10 runs over the first three innings and never looked back in a 13-7 win Sunday afternoon at Gary Hogan Field in Little Rock.
Louisiana (22-14, 10-8 Sun Belt) swept a Sun Belt series for the second straight weekend and upped its season-best winning streak to eight games. It's the first eight-game win streak since May 4-18, 2007.
Chad Keefer led the charge for UL producing four RBI on a 4-for-5 showing at the plate. Jordan Poirrier added three RBI and Alex Fuselier and Greg Fontenot added two apiece.
The run total tied the Cajuns highest output in Sun Belt play and the 18 hits collected were a season-high.
The Ragin' Cajuns will be back in action on Tuesday, April 20 hosting McNeese State (20-15) at M.L. "Tigue" Moore Field. First pitch is set for 6 p.m.
The early onslaught was plenty of support for T.J. Geith who picked up his first decision on the mound since the Arkansas State series. Geith cruised through the first five innings holding the Trojans (21-17, 4-11 Sun Belt) to two runs on three hits.
After the Trojans dropped the lead to 12-7 with two outs in the sixth, Ryland Parker entered in relief and surrendered only one hit over the final 3 1/3 innings to pick up his first Division I save and the Cajuns' third save of the series.
The win increased Louisiana's winning streak over UALR to 13 games dating back to April 2006. UL improved to 42-13 all-time vs. UALR with a 22-8 mark at Gary Hogan Field.
UL stormed out the gate and chased UALR starter Calvin Drinnen after only 1/3 of an inning.
Kyle Olasin reached on a fielding error by Jake Rowell at first base and Matt Goulas followed with a single. A Poirrier single down the right field line scored Olasin with the game's first run.
Keefer doubled down the left field line to score Goulas and Poirrier then Fuselier followed up with a home run to right center and it was 5-0 with no outs recorded.
The Trojans came back with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first inning. A four-pitch walk to Rowell came with two outs. A double by Tyson Parks scored Rowell then a fielding error by Lance Marvel allowed Parks to score.
The Cajuns sent eight batters to the plate in the second and got the two runs back. With the bases loaded, a Keefer single to shallow left and a Marvel infield single scored Olasin and Goulas, respectively, and the lead returned to five runs at 7-2.
UL continued to pepper UALR pitching in the third inning. Three straight hits to start the inning - a Fontenot single, Olasin double and Goulas single - resulted in the first run of the frame.
After a UALR pitching change, Poirrier lifted a sacrifice fly to center field and Keefer's second double of the game brought home Goulas for a 10-2 advantage.
Goulas run gave UL its first double figure run total since plating 11 in the Sunday contest at South Alabama .
A Fontenot two-RBI double down the right field line in the sixth inning gave Louisiana a 10-run cushion needing only six outs to enforce the run rule.
The Trojans avoided the run rule with a five-spot in the bottom of the sixth. UALR loaded the bases twice in the inning and scored on a hit by pitch from Geith and two-run singles by Brock Feldmann and Jason Houston to slice the lead in half at 12-7.
