NIU to MWC - Football Only

NIU is a football only member of the MWC and the Horizon Conference for all other sports, basically a bus league for them.

Northern Illinois will receive about $34 million in 6 seasons as football-only member in Mountain West - $5.7 million a year. MW also will pay NIU $1.5M signing bonus & up to $2.5M for NIU's exit fee to leave MAC.

If we were savvy, which we aren’t, I would work the Big12 to take all our sports outside of football. Football as a travel partner with TxSt.

This will probably change with inflation but Louisiana gets $34 million from the Sunbelt about 15 or 16 years

there is a 0.000% chance the big 12 would want an arrangement like that with us. Sure you can say it won’t hurt to ask, but that won’t mean it could or would happen.

I’m still in favor of jumping to the PAC if there is an opportunity.

Travel would suck, but immediately we are associated with more reputable programs.

Basketball would be a tremendous improvement. Baseball would be a lateral or slight improvement to the SBC.

Overall it’s just a better league. We just couldn’t sell our souls to get there like TxSt did.

SMU recognized they had to level up from the AAC to the ACC and it paid off immediately with a CFP playoff birth.

We have to do whatever it takes to get out of the SBC for football and basketball to signal we are serious about athletics in the future.

This is the way. Dreaming big, long shot but does come down to the benjamin$. And if next UL president has bigger vision for athletics or more of the same old thing.
