Thread: Athletic Budget 2026 and beyond

  1. Support Athletic Budget 2026 and beyond

Hearing a $4 million cut could be coming for the 2026 budget and a $8-10 million cut from the 2027 budget. Is anyone else hearing these numbers? If true UL is done in every sport.

I don't think Maggard will be at UL next football season.

We'll be even more tied at the hip with ULM and La tech if that is the case

I fully expect him to be gone after this athletic year. Who can blame him. We are in dire straits financially for the foreseeable future.

Football drives the bus and the bus is low on fuel.

My question is how did we actually get here?

It’s not just the athletic department that under financial scrutiny.

Things tend to go where we aim. Sticking with very recent history, Administration and Dr. Maggard aimed high on the stadium redo so well done on that. Coaching misses happen to everyone, P4 & G6. Or sometimes a coach's tenure peaks then just runs its course towards mediocrity. We have a bad habit of letting head coach tenure drag on longer than deserved. Four years is enough time to get your program fully in place; to fairly stand on your record for better or worse. I don't blame Coach Des for taking the HC job and no doubt he's a hard working man. However, the decision by administration following Napier's exit to forego a true national football HC search undermined the program's fan support momentum at the same time NIL was taking hold. Fans are speaking up by not showing up much like the last few years of Coach Marlin's tenure when fan apathy mushroomed. There is so much potential here, we see glimpses of it from time to time. Dr. Maggard came here several years ago and publicly stated he was focused on fixing football which included the stadium redo. He aimed high, said so. Got the fanbase excited. Will he do so again?

You’re not wrong. I have heard a big chunk and I do mean big all the way around will be cut.

C4L, we got here because we were working on a credit and kept upping the limit. But unlike the government we can’t just print more money. The chickens have come home to roost.

What you are hearing at this point hasn't been stated in private other than $4M. That number is 10% from 2025, $46M to $40M at this point. Additional cuts could be coming but nothing has been stated beyond that discussion even in private. It's speculation from this point how far is could go from there. But if we eventually fall back to $34M to $36M, the program is pretty much cooked across the board.
