
Malan Potgieter opened his senior season with a 7-under-par 65 to claim a three-stroke lead while the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns Golf team posted a team score of 8-under-280 to claim the first-round lead at the Argent Financial Classic on Sunday at Squire Creek Country Club.
Louisiana claimed a one-shot lead over Rice after 18 holes of the 54-hole event with second-round play slated for Monday beginning at 7:30 a.m. The final round of the season-opener for Louisiana will take place on Tuesday at 8 a.m. Live results will be available at Scoreboard.Clippd.com.
Freshmen Ben Blanco and James Holtsclaw each posted a 1-under-71 in their collegiate debut for the Ragin' Cajuns with Carter Schmitt and Florida transfer Jay Brooks each recording a 1-over-73.
Jean Louis du Plessis, competing as an individual, posted a 1-under-71 in his 2025 debut.
Potgieter posted birdies on four of his first eight holes on the back nine before making the turn at 3-under-33. The 2025 NCAA Regional participant added a pair of birdies at No. 1 and 2 to move to 5-under for the round before collecting birdies on his final two holes to post a 65 for the third time in his collegiate career.
South Alabama (282), Troy (284) and Memphis (285) rounded out the top five in the 17-team field.
Louisiana, which will be paired with Rice and South Alabama in the second round, will tee off from the No. 10 tee beginning with Brooks at 12:50 p.m.
