I think it took about 15 minutes for Maggard to get comfortable and then he loosened up. This should open doors for you guys if you can get around Learfield's over protectionism. But clearly have no say in podcast other than making sure they have access to Coaches and the AD first to create content as per their agreement.
I took several things back from this interview along with what I have learned on my own since January.
1) Tech was a majority decision in the West, even USM was in agreement from the very beginning. The travel cost and traditional footprint was the major requirements. This was a business decision and sometimes you have to do business with people you don't like. That doesn't mean you have to trust them. But if doing business with them makes sense and it benefits your bottom-line, you take the emotion out of the decision and you do it.
2) I knew some people were going to get upset when he answered that they are not pushing for another conference. It's clear they as a collective (SBC) know that the revenue is not available from ESPN to renegotiate the conference contract with any expansion until 2031. Now things have to happen above the SBC like in the AAC like programs like UAB, UNT, FIU and ECU. No way was Dr. Maggard going to mention them in a discussion, but that will be interesting by 2027. There are no exits fees when you a kicked out of a conference for not meeting revenue requirements. Dr. Maggard did mention auxiliary fees, we have some now, but a few will be coming off the books.
3)Finally, the best thing UL can do for itself is finish the stadium and other facilities and win in Football and MBB. Football drives the bus, and it doesn't matter if some people don't like it.
Tech's AD understands the same ramifications. They are raising money for an indoor practice facility. He also mentioned turning around football as a main priority.
Good job on both interviews.
