All of that is partially true.

The way you remove their "you need a game" leverage, is by developing a reputation for playing a solid schedule so that you enhance their strength of schedule.

Back when it mattered that is.

I must admit the va tech and texas tech games were not well publicized, as I was a senior and dont recall either of those, but remember most of the home games, esp. The goal posts coming down!
