So the other Tech thread is in a death spiral. Some things that have not (I don't think, that thread is lo-o-ong) been discussed:
1) Us oldtimers remember that when ULM joined the conference, they had the attitude, "We will beat U-L-L in football, and we will become the real University of Louisiana."
Which was half-right. They owned us for a few years. But there was nothing to back up the assertion that they were the real UL, they did not have our academics, nor our momentum.
Some Tech fans doubtless have the same perspective ULM did.
2) This is the critical one: I would guess that our arm was politically twisted to support Tech into the SBC.
It doesn't matter. Tech doesn't get in without our support. Tech is in a mess right now, fiscally, culturally, politically. They were desperate, and I suspect they had to pull in every marker they had to get this done.
The point is, some of those called markers were collected from us. And we played the pivotal role. If Savoie doesn't support this, Tech is dead.
It's just like ULM didn't get in without our support: RPA kept ULM out until he got what he wanted.
You guys are bashing our administration, but don't forget, Savoie is the old hand, the oldest in the state. He was Louisiana Commissioner for Higher Education before some of the RP crowd was even born.
The upshot? We got something out of this. He didn't trade a gate in the Derby for an old nag, he got something he wanted. What makes me furious is that I'm dying to know what we got...
...and I may die before I find out.
But we can be certain of this one jewel in the mud: Tech now owes us.
A lot.
Consider: ULM has not fought us politically very aggressively over the last few years, because they know their membership in the SBC was our doing; and that they aren't very popular members. Our influence keeps them protected.
Tech is now in the same boat, as this ChatGPT snark makes clear. They are not going to be popular members, which means they won't be influential members. Remember the rumor a few years ago was that a large reason several teams left CUSA for the SBC was...
...Tech. Tech was loathed. Schools wanted to get away from them.
And they were tired of flying into Shreveport, to bus over to Rustville.
That was hardly the whole reason they came to the SBC. But it was a real reason.
So if Tech comes in with their bantam-weight swagger, they're back on the hot seat.
They need our support. Athletically, this was a bad hit for us.
Politically, it was a win. Somewhere, somehow, we got something.
3) Someone mentioned something the other day, and I don't have one jot of evidence it is true. But they asked:
What if we're letting in Tech because we already have a commitment to go elsewhere?
Again, no evidence, just random speculation.
But let's face it, Ragin' Pagin' makes it very clear that random speculation is a heckuva lot more fun that truth.
