I was going to drop this in the Louisiana Tech thread, but this deserves its own spotlight—because it’s not just about Tech. It’s about identity, competition, and why no one else in this state wants to call us "Louisiana."
There are five FBS schools in Louisiana, and every one of them is fighting to be the next big program—the one that stands out. UL and Tech are the two public universities at the center of that fight. Tech took the route of separation: they bolted for another conference, stretched their travel budget thin, and avoided any association with schools in the UL System. Their message? We're above it. We're the crown jewel.
UL’s path is different. We’ve stayed the course, owned the name, and tried to prove ourselves where it counts—on the field, in the stands, and in the brand. But here's the catch: because we’ve leaned into “Louisiana,” no other school wants to give us that recognition. Not Tech, not anyone. And that’s not a coincidence—it’s strategy.
Everyone’s scrambling to separate from the pack. That’s what makes our branding battle so hard. It’s not just resistance—it’s rivalry. And it’s the same reason Tech will never call us “Louisiana.”They know what it means, and they’re not about to help us claim it.
Its the same when it comes to always using Ragin Cajuns. Time to lean in and make more of an effort when it comes to the name Louisiana.
