Exactly! Arm talent is the word for him, but he is high risk. You don't want to take too many of these types of projects in a class, but my understanding is he has a chance to get more money on partial scholarships if he performs and makes the team. Has anyone else heard this as well?
I've coached a lot of pitchers, and it generally doesn't work like this. When these type of arms 'let off the gas' a little and they start aiming which isn't usually a good outcome.
I've had some good success with having these type of pitchers throw BP. First in cages from shorter distances (obviously at slower speeds), but throwing in relation to the batter not to a catcher, so takes the aiming part out of the equation. As they achieve success, you move the distance back and back until you get to the 60'6".
This is all confidence building and mechanics work (if needed). I haven't watched ANY video of this kid, but most of the time I see kids throw this hard and struggle to find the strike zone, they are violently jerking their heads, the above is one way to go about trying to fix it.
