Just read this on the CSN BBS board regarding LA Tech's admission to the SBC:
La tech still blocked.
Sun Belt commissioner pushing for La Tech but being challenged by membership to provide evidence La Tech will benefit the conference.
ULM being asked by membership if they are viable for FBS sponsorship long term.
Is this really the state of the Sun Belt? The Belt can't kick ULM out, they are a founding football member.
I don't think it's that as much as it is calling their bluff. ULM is basically saying that they are barely viable financially and need the travel cost savings from having Louisiana Tech in the conference. The rest of the conference replies by asking them if things are so bad are they sure we can count on them in the long term. If they are asking the rest of us to add a suboptimal member to the league in an effort to basically subsidize them, it's totally valid for the rest of us to ask if they can afford to compete at this level. Minimum standards are the way to go. That is fair and allows all programs the opportunity to retain their membership.
ULM "Bailout" is the term being used by many for what the SBC would be doing by adding La Tech--this would tremendously lower the ULM travel budget. The Warhawks have either the Lowest or close to the lowest Athletic Budget in All of FBS.
Which brings up a crazy hypothetical scenario if that happens. With ULM out, Tech could be brought into the conference (granted they meet the same requirements that got ULM kicked out) while avoiding any arguments about doubling down in a market or three teams in one state. ULM is not dropping down to FCS as so many wish, but they would be homeless in FBS and what conference would be willing to take them after just losing a member? CUSA. Effectively, could it lead to a Tech-ULM swap between the conferences?
