Thread: Tech to the Belt?

  1. Default Re: Tech to the Belt?

I see all the Forget Tech posts and I could not disagree more.

Play them every year in every sport. Out of Conference.

To not do so nullifies any argument stating PAC travel costs are an obstacle.

We can all agree no one wants tech in the conference but gun to my head tech or Lamar and those are the only 2 options. Then I’m on the tech train. And I realize I might be in the minority here. But Lamar brings absolutely nothing to the SBC. Sam Houston is a better option than Lamar. Wku and MT are better options. Hell I think central Arkansas is a better option. I’m a hard no on Lamar just like I would be a hard no on McNeese. To me they are one and the same.

Here remains the question, will the NCAA approve another FCS jump for another program?
Either way it looks long term that another former CUSA member will be offered, Jax State, Missouri State, Louisiana Tech, WKU, MTU, Sam Houston, UTEP or any other at this time there is no consensus. Everyone one of them will have to pay a $5M exit fee and an entry fee for the SBC. Which one of these programs will do so without having to SBC waive the entry fee or pay the CUSA exit fee for no media share the first few years?

I care very little for the two programs in Texas. We don't need the markets available. No one cares about UTEP and not much more concerning Sam Houston. Or do we sit tight until 2027 wait for several AAC programs to get dumped because they are unable to meet the mandated minimum $10M of revenue yearly for athletes set by the commissioner. Those programs in danger today are North Texas, FIU and UAB. And here we are today!
I've heard from multiple sources that the Eastern SBC schools are a pretty hard no on Tech. Why? Don't know the answer to that. Pretty clear though that the likely reasons are down to two possibilities and probably some truth to both. One is they simple don't want another Western school and two is that they are doing a favor for a few of their western counterparts. It is true that UL & ULM simple won't waste the political clout that it would take to vote no on them entering the SBC. However it doesn't prevent them from lobbying a no vote from other schools in the league.

I get the impression that Tech is highly unlikely to get the votes needed. Outside of them no other school has apparently shown interest in the SBC and there doesn't seem to be any consensus among the schools on who else could be approached. As you noted they may be willing to wait on AAC fallout or other moves to happen. Can't say I disagree. A year or two of dealing with scheduling headaches may be worth the wait.

I think the Eastern block would add wku and Delaware and Middle Tennessee in a heartbeat to further build up their desire to break away and start a new regional conference. This is a definite reality down the road and a big worry for us western schools.

We should be politicking for mcneese tech and Lamar so when that day comes we can just be comfortable back in the new and improved southland. Hell we can rename it the gulf states conference

Keep in mind the Western schools can keep them out just as they can keep Tech out.

The writing is on the wall for the SBC West. We may want to start looking out for UL and UL only.

Do whatever it takes to make UL attractive to the AAC as soon as possible.
