For whatever reason, this program gets off to slow starts every year, including the previous 3 that ended in regionals. To act like those 2 guys missing so much time, and in Markle’s case, not being anywhere close to what he was pre-injury, didn’t have a large negative effect on this season, is just sticking your head in the sand to crap on the team/coach/program or whatever the agenda is.

Whether or not anyone wants to believe it, or is just intent on finding some reason to think this team just sucks and the program is failing, the injuries to those 2 guys, along with Morgan and Herrmann dealing with stuff all year, Theut having midseason ankle surgery, and a couple of transfers just not panning out, led to a ton of ABs from a talented class of freshmen that weren’t ready to play full time roles…yet, and some innings from pitchers that probably should have been thrown in intrasquad or in midweek games. The chances of quite a few of these freshmen hitters getting much better due to the experience they got is a big positive for the next few seasons…even if the results this year weren’t what anyone was hoping for.

That’s just an “it is what it is” thing.

And this season isn’t over yet. Other than Conor Higgs, every other position player could be back next year and will get even more experience as long as they can keep playing.

If “the sky is falling” attitude is what some folks want to have, fine. But college baseball players typically make significant improvements from their freshman season. This team is going to be much better over the next couple of years. Hopefully it doesn’t upset the crowd that seems to enjoy griping about the bad instead of enjoying the good.
We are going to have to go get some pitchers next year in the portal. We missed on a few this season, and they're no longer here. I think our bats should improve if the younger talent can step up, but I thought the bullpen was very sparse compared to recent years which cost us in quite a few midweek games.

    No doubt.

Should have Morgan, Herrmann (word is he’s coming back), Tollett, Hess, and Marcotte back. Maybe Holzhammer too if he decides to come back. There are also 3 very good HS pitchers coming in, but those are a crap shoot. I’d expect a couple (if not all 3) to throw significant innings though. I’d like to see at least one proven weekend guy from either JUCO or a smaller D1 or D2 program come in. And hopefully he’s a proven strike thrower.

Then there are guys who could make jumps like Tollett, Hess, and Marcotte did (hopefully they all make another jump). A few 2-way guys like Dobson, Hebert and Parker Smith. Maybe Wil Taylor can harness his stuff some.

Personally as much of a spark plug as he is on offense, I’d like to see Mandino do more mound work. He’s got good stuff, and talented lefties tend to do well in college baseball if they can throw strikes.

This is an important offseason for Gunner.

Bob Marlin says hi. Dude beat NO ONE in 15 years and hung around making bank. Pathetic. Deggs isn’t near on the hot seat. Some rough decisions will be made over the next couple of weeks and some may shock some people. Several players and even coaches aren’t safe currently. Should be interesting.

My gut is as this program finishes the season in the fashion it did tonight, I don't expect Morgan to be here next fall.

Mitchell, Durbin and Pruitt are really good HS pitchers, but some upperclassmen experience is needed next season. Signing those will be tough if not expensive.

There is no doubt Leger needs a good offseason and fall.

But many still "gave up" on him year after year

    2 of my opinions are:

Deggs is a very good coach who has potential to be great and not only get to Omaha, but win multiple games there

Some good players that we could have this year as sophmores and upperclassmen with experience were unable to make rosters because of many players playing extra Covid years or uncertainty effecting recruiting. Of course programs with deep pockets could offer more to players to ride the bench.

Not making excuses. I predict a win today and then it is a whole new season.

Deggs gets next year. Its a contract year. We have a repeat of this season, he needs to go. We need to see substantial improvement next year.

Laughable. My how quick we forget several brutal seasons under Robe. Stayed here 25 years. Deggs takes over absolutely nothing [no talent] in 2020 and mercifully, due to Covid only had to endure 13 games. I don't think that team would have won 25 games. Then 3 out of the next 4 years goes to regionals and you screaming he needs to go ? Got it. We're a MID MAJOR dude. Get over it.

With that type of reasoning, sounds like you were disappointed that Marlin was let go this year.

Yes, we had brutal seasons under Robe. But his teams were put together in a manner that with development, they would become a good team. That happened numerous times.

Can you honestly say that our pitching staff the way its made up can become a good staff? I dont see it at all. Then you add in the absolutely head scratching decisions that keep being made over and over and over.

Those things continue and that is why I believe that he would need to go. Its more than just W & L and regional appearances.
