It’s a down year, but down years around here should NEVER include losing series to ULM and Arkansas State. The literal bottom of the barrel. Whether it’s talent evaluation, coaching philosophy, WHATEVER, it needs to be figured out and dealt with NOW.

This year’s roster construction was horrid. It started with a very lackluster high school recruiting class from 3 years ago. We expected those guys to step up and lead a group of freshmen instead of going heavy into the JUCO ranks again. With all the JUCO guys gone, the veterans have failed to step up to allow the freshmen to be eased in.

Hopefully this freshman class ends up working out, but the writing is on the wall. Deggs needs to bring in a 6-7 every day starters in the field before next season.

Also may be time to have an uncomfortable conversation about how our pitchers are developing under Gunner.

  3. UL Baseball 13-3 Red Wolves Run-Rule Cajuns

Jake Henry Williams began a seven-run eruption in the third inning with a two-run single which broke a 3-3 contest and Arkansas State scored 10 unanswered runs to defeat the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns, 13-3, in a seven-inning Sun Belt Conference game on Friday at M.L. "Tigue" Moore Field at Russo Park.

C’mon man. You are fighting awfully hard to defend something that is completely indefensible. If you don’t believe me, believe Deggs. Straight from the horse’s mouth:
“I apologize to everybody that showed up here and I apologize to everybody that paid their money to get into this place and you have my word I guarantee you it will get fixed,” he said. “That’s about as non-competitive as I’ve seen since 2012. That was my first year here, and I’m standing in a dugout with Coach Robe, and we’re getting our butts kicked by ULM. And I told him, I said, it’s never gonna happen again. Well, I’ll be dang. 13 years later, here we go. And you know what? You gotta have some dogs, man. And you got my word that will happen.”

Deggs continued, “You know, you got to have fight and you got to have scrap to you. And that’s something I haven’t seen a whole lot of all year.”

I agree with you on some things. I’m all for sitting guys who don’t work in the classroom, but this weekend wasn’t caused by that. Some of our “best”arms got torched for 13 runs today. I also agree that with 3 Regionals in 5 years Deggs deserves more than comparisons to Marlin and being run out on a rail. However, make no bones about it: this is a poor product out on the field this year, and it is not up to the standard this program and even Deggs have set. We can quibble about what the exact standard is, but it sure as hell isn’t this. Deggs is a smart man for apologizing to the people who paid for this product. He knows damn well they just got their hats handed to them by a program that puts 100 people in the stands for home games. Even in the “down” years these kinds of things shouldn’t happen. Series losses to stAte and Monroe. Series loss to a losing record SJSU team. 0-2 against McNeese. 0-2 against Tech. Swept by Southern Miss and Irvine. Run ruled by LSU, Southern Miss, and stATe. This staff is responsible for putting a winning product on the field, and they failed at that job this year. No equivocations. I don’t see our peer programs sitting back saying, “well come on guys. You can’t expect us to be good EVERY YEAR.” Thankfully Deggs doesn’t seem to be singing that tune either. The day that happens I’ll throw up in my mouth…and spend my money elsewhere.

There were 5 returning starters. Quite a few got off to slow starts, and with a highly rated freshman class. And you have to give guys opportunities early in the year, regardless of any of that. Then multiple starters got hurt and missed significant time. Others struggled. Guys that were playing well, got hurt, came back, and then struggled.

How could the lineup NOT have changed? Not to mention that guys need at bats. You can’t run the same 9 or 10 players out there all season long.

A couple weeks ago, Deggs said that he had settled on who was going to play the rest of the way. Then Yuhasz got hurt again. And then you have 3 of the remaining 8 obviously do something egregious enough that they were removed from the lineup.

Again, how was the lineup NOT going to change all year?

I heard him say that as well. He was ____ED and rightfully so. And when he says he’s gonna fix it, I believe him. Or at the very least think he’s earned the benefit of the doubt that he will

But, and I’ve said this many times over the last few years (when there were a bunch of negative comments even in seasons that ended with at large regional bids), the perception of what many think this program is, was, should be, etc is very much skewed.

What is the standard? Obviously being in regionals 3 straight years doesn’t give any benefit of the doubt now. Was the program under Coach Robe “the standard”?

After going to Omaha, 2 of the next 3 seasons, the Cajuns did NOT have a winning record. Getting to Omaha was amazing, but it was the outlier. And 25 years later, it still is.

Then there was a good stretch from 2005-2007…followed by a 2-year record of 57-59.

Then a great run from 2013-2016…and then Coach Robe’s last two seasons had a combined record of 62-59.

Anyone who expects to be in a regional every season is simply setting themselves up for disappointment. Even a great G5 program like ECU, who’s been to 6 straight regionals, and hosted 3 of them, is barely above .500 this year and has an RPI around 80. Hell, 2 teams in the SEC (Miss State and Ole Miss) won the national title and then both missed the postseason altogether for multiple years afterwards.

If seasons like this one begin to happen more often than what’s taken place the last 3 years, then yeah, maybe start discussing the leadership of the program. But damn, after 3 straight regionals, and last year winning the conference outright…and by 3 games…and being ranked in the top 25 for quite a few weeks, one crappy season and people want the damn coach fired??? That’s complete nonsense.

    Depends on your goals

Down seasons are no surprise, but this year's team checked alot of boxes off the list of "things we'll never see UL baseball do" (swept by McNeese, lost series to ULM, run ruled by a ____ team at home, etc)

Is the goal to have a program that competes in the conference and goes to regionals, maybe wins a game or two there? If so, just come out and say it. Nothing wrong with setting the expectation.

I was under the impression when they built the new stadium it was to host regionals, but I'm not part of all the hand-shaking and back-patting meetings up in the loge boxes or suites. Thru the window those guys seem pretty happy, so maybe I should be too.

How big is the NIL budget?

He seemed to be winning with Rove's program and now it is his and he is failing. Is just making the regionals the goal for some of you? The goal should be to WIN a regional and he has not sniffed that.

Time for some new blood if he does not fix next year. He deserves that chance, but the leash needs to be short.
