Louisiana struck for five runs on six hits in the sixth inning to break open a one-run contest and pull away for a 9-3 win over UALR in the second game of a weekend series at Gary Hogan Field in Little Rock.
With the victory the Cajuns (21-14, 9-8 Sun Belt) captured a Sun Belt series for the second straight weekend and stretched their season-best win streak to seven games.
The two teams will wrap up the series Sunday at 1 p.m.
With the Cajuns in front 2-1, Alex Fuselier led off the sixth with a single and Tyler Frederick followed with a double down the right field line. A Daniel Golden wild pitch scored Fuselier and jumpstarted the Cajuns' scoring spree.
Dillon Guillory singled home Frederick/>/> for a 4-1 lead and he would later score on a sacrifice bunt attempt by Kyle Olasin. After a Matt Goulas single, back-to-back RBI hits from Jordan Poirrier and Chad Keefer plated two additional runs that pushed the lead to 7-1.
The sixth inning outburst proved to be enough cushion to secure the win for Justin Robichaux who made his first start on the mound since March 6. Robichaux tossed six innings and scattered eight UALR hits while surrendering just two earned runs.
Robichaux's success was due in large part to throwing first pitch strikes and retiring the first batter of each inning. The Trojans (21-16, 4-10 Sun Belt) saw their leadoff hitter go 0-for-6 against Robichaux.
Dayton Marze backed up Robichaux tossing the final three innings and posting five strikeouts to collect the save and preserve Louisiana/>/>'s 12th consecutive win over UALR.
Five Cajuns posted at least two hits with Frederick/>/>'s three being the team-high. Greg Fontenot, Fuselier and Olasin each scored two runs.
Marze's performance continued the solid showing by the Cajuns bullpen which has allowed only 20 hits and seven earned runs over the past 30 innings worked during the seven-game win streak.
Olasin's leadoff home run got the Cajuns off to a quick 1-0 start.
UL's defense turned a double play in each of the first two innings to make quick work for Robichaux who used only 11 pitches during that time frame.
UALR pulled even in the third inning when Brock Feldmann scored from third on a balk issued to Robichaux.
Three walks, a wild pitch and throwing error in the top of the fifth inning led to the Cajuns regaining their lead.
Olasin reached on a fielder's choice, stole second base and advanced to third base on a wild pitch after Poirrier walked. Poirrier stole second base during Keefer's at bat and catcher Landis Wilson's throw skipped into center field allowing Olasin to score for a 2-1 lead.
EXTRA BASES: The Cajuns current seven-game winning streak is the longest since winning seven straight March 29-April 8, 2009. On Sunday, the Cajuns will attempt to extend the win streak to eight games which would mark the first occurrence since the 2007 season.
