Thread: Roster Limits

    Default Roster Limits

Huge news today in the settlement negotiations. This will affect the current players AND the 25-26 commits who had offers pulled early because of the upcoming roster limits.

-Current players AND 25-26 kids removed will be considered Designated Scholarship Athletes.
-DSAs are exempt from roster limits for their entire eligibility

Teams will be able to fill their full roster limit PLUS these DSA players. Finally, a little move forward in the negotiations back towards sanity in college athletics.

Another move to increase the separation of the P4 from everyone else. Now the big boys can have an extra 20-30 scholarship players on their football teams. Of course, we can, too, but how many G-6 schools are going to fund 125-140 football scholarships?

I think you will see the university stick with the same amount of funded scholarships moving forward for basketball and football. At least for the time being.

I think we will fund 105 in FB and 15 in MBB; I seriously doubt we will exceed the roster limit in scholarship funding. I have not seen the language of the agreement, but I am willing to bet that the roster limit is going to be a hard limit in the sense that if you exceed the roster limit, ALL players will have to be on scholarship, effectively killing the use of walk on players.

Football funded 85. Basketball funded 13. I expect that to be the same moving forward.

Agreement is that you cannot exceed the roster limit, except for these DSAs for their eligibility. There's nothing in writing that says a school has to fund any scholarships, only that the roster limit is the max amount allowed.

Football may fund 85 [though I have been told otherwise], but I would bet money that Men's BB funds 15.

So how does this affect baseball specifically?
I am assume based on this info they will have a 34 man roster with an additional 3 DSA's?
By the way what does DSA stand for?

    Designated Scholarship Athlete.

In answer to your other question, who knows? None of us have seen the exact language of the agreement.

Designated Scholarship Athlete's can come from anywhere. So in theory a team could have 35 roster spots filled plus 20 DSAs from across the country for a total of 55. Nobody will do it, but it's possible. Coaches want a set limit to work with, they don't want to carry extra kids who won't produce for a few years. It's win now or get fired.
