. T&F: Russell Wins 10k, Louisiana Puts Two Others on the Podium on Strong Opening Da
Pulling away in the final laps, Isabell Russell won the 10,000m at the Sun Belt Conference Outdoor Championships on Thursday in Harrisonburg, Virginia. Russell was one of three Cajuns to finish the opening night on the podium with seven scored events.
Russell kept pace with the front of the pack before taking the lead at 8800m. She closed strong, running the fastest time in the final five laps, including a final lap of 1:11.97, the fastest lap on the course by almost three seconds, to pull away from the rest of the field and finish with a final time of 35:08.62. Not far behind her was teammate Ella Segura's 35:13.54 to finish fourth. Russell's time was the third-fastest in school history, and Segura's was the fourth-fastest.
Lily Murray got Louisiana on the board earlier in the day in the hammer as her final throw of the day at 187-9/57.23 put her third. Kimola Hines also scored in the event, placing seventh at 174-6/53.18. Ellie Manuel also picked up points for the Cajuns in the javelin, finishing fifth at 141-10/43.24.
Will Howard was the lone scorer on the men's side. The freshman finished third in the javelin with a throw of 190-7/58.08 as Louisiana looks to claim both the men's indoor and outdoor titles in 2025.
Nelvin Appiah and Federico Bovo got the week started for Louisiana in the decathlon. Halfway through the event, Bovo sits second (-20) and Appiah (-46) is third heading into tomorrow's final events. Appiah (10.91) and Bovo (10.98) went back-to-back in the 100m to open the day. Bovo finished strong, winning the long jump (22-4.25/6.82), high jump (6-6/1.98), and 400m (49.34) to cancel a ninth-place finish in the shot put (30-9/9.37).
On the women's side, Louisiana had a pair of qualifiers for Saturday's finals. Shenell Tucker was third in qualifying at 1:01.15 in the 400m hurdles, while Amairi Ashford was the final qualifier in the 200m at 23.90.
The men saw a pair of qualifiers in the 1500m. Reece Shelby was eighth after running a 3:52.80 while Joe Patterson was ninth at 3:53.07.
Louisiana has half of the field in the 200m. Qualifying for the finals on Saturday were Lawson Jacobs, Mark Daley, Camren Hardy, and Caemon Scott.
Day two from Harrisonburg begins at 9:30 a.m. with the second day of decathlon events.
