The name change started about 1979 when U(S)L received national recognition, and the letter announcing it was addressed to 'Southwestern Louisiana State University.' That got the SGA working on it.
And from time to time, we have been confused with BESSE,* and of course, LSU has tried very hard to convince the world that they are the center of Cajun culture, and even Acadian/Cajun language & research... with a few spectacular fails along the way.
So it is interesting that— perhaps for the very first time?— the table has been turned. Lavalee was at LSUS, but this article says otherwise.
