UL Researcher Co-authors Book on Louisiana’s First Black, Female Doctor
When Dr. Emma Wakefield-Paillet, an African-American woman from New Iberia, received her Louisiana medical license in 1897, she made history by becoming the first Louisiana woman to do so. She was heralded globally for her achievements, but little of her legacy was known — or recognized — in her hometown for 121 years until the Iberia African American Historical Society erected an historical marker in the physician’s honor in 2018.
