Tuition now controlled/capped by legislature. Fees allowed to make up shortfall.
Fees need to be capped and the waste cut! Invest in professors, more course offerings, classrooms, etc.

Where is the waste? I’m sure it’s there. But where. In Engineering, each dept has ONE admin/scty person. Most depts have ONE lab asst. That’s pretty much staff at Dept level. Deans office has a larger staff that serves entire college. I imagine most colleges are same. Admin overall in Univ has been lean. We pushed to increase recruiting staff to reach out to more HS. Slight increase.
Research is already shorthanded in support. Paperwork suffers. Can’t afford to increase staff.
Again, I’m sure waste is present but I suspect it’s more likely not enough staff or not in most efficient positions. Just not a simple fix. I know T-Joe has spoken to all managers in Univ to find ways to reduce costs.

Does not include additional fees for first time students and a few other fees like support old adjunct fees. That doesn’t exist but I’m working on it.
$3800 in fees and none of it going to athletics! Where in the hell is all that money going? I can’t believe there are many departments in need of more money than athletics!!!!

It would take independent outside eyes to determine this. Could be programs or procedures that no longer apply or irrelevant. If we do not remedy this situation, college education will be for the very rich!

    It already is.

Fun can wax poetic about returns on investment all he wants. That argument was relevant 20 or 30 years ago. We have now priced out the majority of parents. Relying on government loans has caused this.

Bottom line, unless your child has a lifelong dream of being something that requires a certain degree, you are better off having them learn a trade and start life without debt. They'll get married earlier and have kids earlier.

Worshipping at the altar of the Ivory Tower has been a net negative on society.

With Tops and Scholarships it’s actually room and board that are the real expenses. For many students, starting at a JC near to home is much better to do. Books in many curricula are now online versus paper and many profs don’t require books. Helps costs. Beds, booze, food and dating…. you’re on your own.
UL is now over $20,000 a year all in. It is tough going for lots of people.
    Private schools are insane.
But I also remember back in NOLA, tuition at Jesuit was higher than UL then. My youngest cost me less tuition and fees at Miss St than Jesuit. My oldest at Cal Tech for two years not so much.
