Let’s not get too hyped. Squeaked out a series sweep against a sub .500 ball club at home (getting lucky thanks to some wind on Friday). I wish I could be more excited but we’ve seen a large sample size of this team so far this year that says otherwise.
With that being said, it’s all about winning games and this team has done that 2 weekends in a row. I think JR has earned a Saturday start. But I do like having him anchor that Sunday spot in possible rubber matches or completing the sweep like today.
It’ll be interesting to see what this team can do on weekends once Markle and Yuhasz are back to 100%, and even more importantly, Dylan Theut. His impact on the weekends is enormous.
I’m sure most people will continue to freak out during the week and say the team sucks and all of that, but there’s just not enough pitching depth on this roster to be great in those games. They’re all about getting guys experience at this point, and maybe finding someone that develops into a guy that can help on the weekend. Same thing on offense.
Fully healthy, this team can be a tough weekend opponent though. I just hope that we get to see that at some point.
Also worth mentioning, Conor Higgs is having a GREAT season and deserves some praise. The season is about half over, but right now he’s batting .351 and is on pace for 21 HRs.
For reference, last season when Kyle Debarge was an All American and Sun Belt player of the year, Debo hit .355 with 21 HRs…breaking a HR record that stood for decades.
In conference play, Higgs is currently 2nd in batting, tied for 1st in runs, tied for 2nd in triples, 2nd in HRs, tied for 2nd in RBIs, first in on base%, first in slugging%, and obviously first (by a lot) in OPS.
If the season ended today, he’s the SBC player of the year.
And keep in mind, he’s done this against what is currently ranked as the 15th toughest schedule in the country.
Happy for Higgy after he struggled a bit last year.
