Thread: Louisiana Welcomes Donald Reyes to Men’s Basketball Staff

  1. UL Basketball Louisiana Welcomes Donald Reyes to Men’s Basketball Staff

New head coach Quannas White has added Donald Reyes to the staff of Louisiana Men's Basketball.

Reyes comes to Louisiana after a three-year stint as the head coach at Loyola (N.O.) where he won 50 games with the Wolf Pack.

In his first season at Loyola, Reyes was named the Southern States Athletic Conference Coach of the Year after leading the Wolf Pack to a 24-7 overall record, 16-4 in SSAC Play, and the SSAC Regular Season and Tournament Championships. The 24 wins were tied for the second-most in a season in program history. It was the third SSAC tournament title in program history, and the program's second-straight regular season title.

The Wolf Pack again earned an SSAC Championship in Reyes' second season as the seventh seed, becoming the first team to win four games in four days to capture the tournament title. It was the program's third consecutive tournament title, and its fourth in the last six seasons.

Prior to that, Reyes spent 15 years coaching in the Division I ranks. He served as the Director of Basketball Operations at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi in 2021-22, helping the Islanders reach the NCAA Tournament for the first time in 15 years. Before that, he was an assistant coach at Bethune-Cookman, leading recruiting, scouting, player development, and basketball operations from 2019-21.

In last week’s profile of Coach Quannas White in the Acadiana Advocate, Kevin Foote mentioned Josh White, brother of Quannas, would also be on staff. Josh White has been on the staff of Texas Southern in recent years. Johnny Jones is Head coach at Texas Southern. I wonder how they are able to bring a brother of the head coach on staff considering the nepotism laws of Louisiana. If anyone can explain that, it would be interesting to read. As far as Coach Reyes goes, I think it is a great idea to bring someone who has head coaching experience to the staff. Coach Q probably has not been a head coach since AAU days. Having someone who has had to make decisions vs recommendations is valuable as a sounding board.

The nepotism law does not apply to college athletics.

Did they change it? It applied with the Lotief's. I also thought I remember it being mentioned that Glasco couldn't hire his daughter at UL which he hired at TT.

I accidentally placed the following in the wrong thread earlier.

Kevin Foote has an article on the assistant coaches up on the Acadiana Advocate website. It says another member of the staff will be Scott Raines. Raines worked with White when he was a player at Midland junior college and Oklahoma. He is a former head coach at Howard Junior College (West Texas JUCO). He compiled a record of 170 and 91 while at Howard. His last year at Howard was 2022. He left there due to his wife becoming the Athletic Director and Head softball coach at Galveston Junior College. She is still in that role there. Interesting tidbit regarding his last year at Howard in 2022. Hosanna Kitenge was on that team. Hosanna redshirted that season due to injury suffered at Coastal Carolina. He moved on to a different JC before coming here.

The first step is White’s new staff. Typically, organizing a staff is about past connections and that’s certainly the case this time as well.

The closest relationship is his younger brother Josh White, who has been an assistant coach at Texas Southern under his former North Texas coach Johnny Jones.

Also expected to join White’s staff is Donald Reyes and Scott Raines.
