UL Fire Station Land Swap Expands Main Campus

Lafayette is exchanging property on Johnston Street that houses a 72-year-old fire station with university owned land on Cajundome Boulevard to build a new fire station.

Under a proposal, which the City Council agreed to on Tuesday, the city will become the owner of 2.37 acres of land owned by the University of Louisiana at Lafayette along Cajundome Boulevard, appraised at $1.03 million.

A fire station inside Cajun Basin is a good thing.

This spot on Cajun Dome Blvd. "was" the proposed free tailgating area.

Most fireman I know are very good cooks. Maybe they do some tailgate cooking at the new firehouse on gamedays.

Does this mean likelihood of all of that extra student housing from 2013 master plan is pretty low (for that area by Blackham)?

The city got the short end of the stick.... Who ever said the property was worth 1.03 million is smoking meth.

I'm not so sure. Here's a couple of acres of commercial property way out by Gator Cove.

That fire station is going to be placed on a Boulevard that we all use, and located between Johnston and Congress streets, two of the busiest streets in all of Acadiana.

Considering all of that, I'm surprised that it wasn't priced even higher.

I think work is underway on new Master Plan. Things change.

The property is not suited for a fire station. There is a drop off of about 8 feet from the street to the coulee. They will have to spend a ton of money for a retaining wall to get the property usable for fire trucks to maneuver. I know the guy that designed it. Just saying

Interesting that article noted structural issues with existing fire station. Back in 60s Wayne Wallace who was Engr Dean and soils expert along with Jim Reeves foundation and concrete guy worked on a small building used as a convenience store which had serious foundation issues. It was located not far from the present site of fire station. Turned out that area was site of very old garbage dump.

I'm confused. The article says the fire station is planned for the east side of CajunDome Blvd, and the map suggests it will be before the coulee passes underneath, so on the side opposite from the coulee.

Do you know the actual location?

Article has a map. Looks like it would be in between Cajundome boulevard and the barns.
