A lot of money was spent in the early 90's to better connect Congress beyond downtown directly to the Thruway. Now on a road diet so that taxpayer funded progress was undone. Now the City is proposing a road diet for another major arterial roadway, Johnston St.? This makes no sense whatsoever. Beautify it, repair sidewalks, improve lighting and cross walks, OK but don't go crazy. These major arteries need to move traffic, not reduce lanes.
I could be wrong, and I hope I am, but I don’t know about this.
Remember a couple years ago, we voted down a parish tax renewal which revenues were to go to Parish functions: the clerk, the assessor, the sheriff.
When LCG was looking at the lost revenues, the argument was just that: “hey, those are parish functions, and we can’t use city dollars to pay for those parish functions.”
I think a court stepped in and said “not so fast, my friend.”
LCG is in fact the parish and LCG has revenue that will be used to pay for those functions.
I don’t know if they cared where the revenues came from or where the expenditures were going
It was LCG‘s responsibility.
I think this is going to be next to impossible.
Remember a couple years ago when the smarks muscled through the charter changes creating two councils: one city council and one parish council?.
Prior to this, we had one 9 person consolidated council that would vote on things as a single body. And a super majority was six out of nine votes.
Well, with the creation of this new two council system, now you have two votes
And a vote to de consolidate would have to go through BOTH councils.
And here’s the kicker:
Since the super majority is 2/3, in our new way of doing things, you would need 4 out of five members from each body to vote in the affirmative
One body could approve it, but if only three of the five does, it fails.
The city is not in a good position.
