Economics 101: $700,000 invested in a very conservative stock fund would yield at a minimum 5% annually: That is $35,000 per yr without touching the principal. Alternatively, leaving the entire amount invested would give you [assuming age 20 when you got the after tax 700k] a bit over $3,000,000 at age 50. Assuming 3% inflation, that $3 mil would have a value equivalent to roughly $1.4 mil in 2025 dollars.
A. I have been averaging over 10% for 20 years. I think 5% is a very reasonable number.
B. The smart ones will invest most of it. The not-so-smart will blow it in year 1.
C. The smart ones will get a job and manage their windfall for retirement. The not-so-smart will have to get a job, since they blew their money when they got it.
In answer to A. The 30 year [1994-2024] average growth for the S&P was 9%.
I have been waiting for an idiot like you to say something like this. No comparison between Glasco first season and Alyson first season. Glasco only lost 3 good players Denham, Sanders and Creighton. The rest that left weren't even playing and Lotief had about ten more players than the current roster has. Also Glasco had Summer Eleyson. Alyson had nine players less Landry, Ellestad, Valdez, Davis, Allred, Riassetto, Langeliers, Roman, Greater and no stud pitchers. Glasco was also able to get better players than the players that left who weren't that good. Alyson came in so late she had the option of getting whatever left of the slim pickings. Glasco also didn't have the schedule that Alyson has. This schedule was set up for a wcws type team. No comparison at all.
Good points on a and c, i was thinking certificate of deposit. Not sure stocks are way to go for students but your math was better.
As far as b, should a university, a taxbase and a community "invest" so much and basically attempt to give a lifetime windfall for just a few years of "work" when the odds they do the right thing is less than 50 pct?.. they already get to play for free, with many other benefits, look how many others pay to play, travel ball, adult leagues, gym memberships, etc.
Although none of us are satisfied with where we are this year; it is important to note that even with our shortcomings we are still in the top 50 RPI, and 8 of our 15 losses are to Top 25 RPI teams. We have not pulled a James Madison who have fallen off a cliff following their WCWS run 4 years ago. We still have 7 games remaining against top 50 RPI [CCU x3, TxSt x3 and aTm] and 8 more against RPI 51-100 [LTU x2, Troy x3 and USM x3]. The remaining 6 games are against 101-150 [JMU x3 @ 114 and USA x3 @ 147.
Our current record vs RPI 26-309 is 14-7. Only aTm [1] among our remaining is in the top 25. If we go 14-7 in our remaining games, and at least win 3 of 6 in the CCU and TxSt series, I believe we will be in position to be considered for an at-large bid. We may not get one, but our resume won't be that bad.
Imagine if bob marlin said this, lol....
Meanwhile still hawking rpi, when it was proven inferior by the ncaa itself. How can they continue to use a self admitted inferior standard. Why no lawsuits
