Those were great times, but those of us who are getting some age on us and were there in Blackham for the Bo Lamar days, saw what the height of excitement looked like. We were ranked as high as #4 in the nation! I guess there was no fire martial back then, because were sitting in the isles at times, all the way is all sections. And it was loud!!!
First game I ever attended was December 11 of 1971. Lamar led then USL to a 90-83 victory over the Top 20 ranked Jerry Tarkanian coached Long Beach 49ers. Tremendous excitement in Blackham that night as that score was attained without a shot clock or 3 point baskets. Little in our athletic history matches the support the community had for that team. I recently returned from an overseas vacation. Spoke to another retired guy on the tour who moved out of Lafayette when he was 9 years old. When he learned I was a basketball fan, he mentioned he recalls the Lamar exploits . Hopefully we can regain some of that passion soon.
Or the game where Bo scored 62 points. Playing Northeast, a visitor fan kept yelling “One man team, one man team”. I was only about 10, but I stood up and yelled “One man is beating your whole team!” My Dad glared at me and said, “Sit down and shut up!”
