If every team didn't look for 3 point shooters to play guard, they could get all the long, athletic physical guards they need. If your players aren't shooting 40% or better from three point range, they shouldn't take any contested 3's. Recruit slashing scorers who are high motor relentless defenders and play old school Bob Knight basketball.
40% 3 point shooters are rare. Out of the 3,600 plus D-1 players, there are 50.

Statistical evidence shows that shooting 3's at less than 38% results in lower scoring totals than shooting 2's at 50%. I am not suggesting completely eliminating the 3 ball from the game; just being much more selective with which 3's are attempted, and running offensive sets and plays that are not specifically designed to shoot 3's.
