Good post. Higgs, Stelly, Amedee, and Torres are the only returning starters (started at least half the games last year). And none of those guys are All Conference level returners like Carson Roccaforte or Kyle Debarge. They’ve all been role player-type starters thus far in their careers. So, no doubt, there will be growing pains.
Unfortunately, Higgs dropped a fly ball tonight. Stelly let one drop he probably should have caught, and Amedee made a big error…while playing wildly out of position at 2B.
And that returning group, collectively, hasn’t done a whole lot at the plate either, although Amedee had a good night tonight, as Higgs did Tuesday, and Yuhasz had a pretty good weekend last weekend. But it’s been very inconsistent offense from them as a whole.
I thought the pitchers performed pretty well tonight, considering there were 2 “hits” that should have been outs, and 4 errors made behind them. That game, if the defensive plays had been made, could have reasonably been 1-1 going to the bottom of the 9th.
At some point, hopefully sooner rather than later, the 9 or 10 (or 11) regulars will separate themselves and a fairly consistent lineup will be established.
As you said, with just a few regulars returning, with so many freshmen, and the schedule being played…expecting this team to win a bunch of games early was probably a bit overly optimistic. Even with a bunch of returners, for whatever reason, this team takes a while to find its footing every year. I have no idea why that is, but it happens.
All of that said, until there are 8 guys that can take the field and make routine baseball plays, things aren’t going to get much better. I’ve been watching Cajuns baseball for 40 years, and I cant remember a team struggling this bad defensively. It’s tough to watch.
What D1 had to say after Opening Weekend:
What UL had to say after Nebraska G1:

The cold weather yesterday, only felt cold to one team.
For Nebraska it felt like spring.
I will say this, yesterday with the wind and the same 40 degrees I couldn't put on enough to stay warm.
This morning I fed the chickens and did some work around the yard (not much) with just a long sleeve shirt on and it did not feel as cold as any point yesterday all bundled up.
Geaux Cajuns
SHake it off and win two today and all is good in Cajun Land, but it will be hard if we continue to committ errors.
Can someone go live and stream the games for us? LOL
Ridiculous we are playing a top 25 team and these two games today are not streamed.
