The season is just beginning, though. Curious how it plays out.

Deggs in tough spot early on unless you have a veteran team coming back where it is easy to plug guys in. He has talented freshman who can play but it is tough to start those guys in front of guys who have been in the program and put in the time. It will eventually work itself out Deggs has to give the older guys enough time to either work out or not. I expect the freshman will eventually get the role the cream will rise to the top. Defense has to be played better the pitching was not bad this weekend.
Agree with all of this. McGehee and Dilhoff both struggled. Hopefully they get things figured out. Getting Herrman back (hopefully) next week will help. The 3 relievers that were first out of the pen (Trimble, Theut, Hess) combined to throw 11.1 innings without allowing an earned run. Thats a very good sign. And of course, Morgan was his normal self, which is All American level.
A couple (maybe a few) of these freshmen will be really good players…this year. And will mix in with some of the returners that have some track record and will get going. It’s disappointing to get off to a slow start, yet again, but there are certainly enough talented dudes on this team to get things rolling in the right direction.
The defense today was obviously atrocious. But when 5 freshmen are in the lineup, and all 5 of them in the first college start of their careers, I think some leeway can be given. It’s a big stage, for the first time in their lives. Dilhoff having only made about 8 appearances in his career, over 2 years, at 2 different schools, probably was fighting the nerves as well. He (and McGehee) got off to decent starts and then just let things unravel on them. That cant happen.
Bright spots on offense this weekend were Luke Yuhasz, Brooks Wright, Sam Ardoin, and while the stats don’t show it, Drew Markel. Three of those are newcomers. Add the expected performance from guys like Higgs, Stelly, Amedee, and Torres…and there is enough there to be a good baseball team. Plus the development of some of the other freshmen.
The bad news is that it needs to happen quickly. The next 4 weekends are all against top flight competition. Nebraska, UC-Irvine, DBU, and Troy are all top 25 caliber teams.
