Thread: Cajun RPI

  1. UL Baseball Cajun RPI

The Cajun RPI fell a little this week from earlier in the week ...
    https://forumeus.com/sh...34&postcount=9

... as I expected since the conference did not fare well on Wednesday.

The Cajuns now have a .5598 Adjusted RPI and a .5586 Base RPI, good for being ranked #53 and #53 respectively. The Cajuns hold a slim lead over Nebraska and UC Irvine and are .0017 back from Pittsburgh.

Unfortunately, the Cajuns will take a hit in the RPI with a single loss this weekend. UALR has a .5013 (#146) Adjusted RPI and a .5025 (#143) Base RPI.

Cajun fans need to hope that Northwestern State finishes strong (and stays in the top 75 Base RPI), else the RPI bonus (.0012) will disappear.

Whats their remaining schedule look like?

Northwestern State's remaining schedule is a little more difficult overall than that of the Cajuns. The average Base RPI for their remaining schedule is just under 117. The Demons have difficult road series against the two Southland teams just above them in the standings (first and second place) ... Texas State and Southeastern Louisiana. They also play LSU twice (one neutral, one road), and once at Mississippi State.

Northwestern State currently has a Base RPI of 57 and an Adjusted RPI of 58. It is opponents' Base RPI that is used to determine RPI bonus qualification.

The Cajun Base RPI and Adjusted RPI improved to .5623 and .5635 respectively after yesterday's action. This is good for a Base RPI Rank of 52 and an Adjusted RPI Rank of 53.

(Base RPI, Base RPI Rank; Adjusted RPI, Adjusted RPI Rank)
    (.5623, #52; .5635, #53)

The Cajuns are a mere .0009 out of the #49 Adjusted RPI spot and only trail Western Kentucky (.5922, #23; .5982, #23) in the Sun Belt.

The UALR Base RPI and Adjusted RPI was unchanged at .5013 and .5025 respectively.

    Through yesterday's games ...

(Base RPI, Base RPI Rank; Adjusted RPI, Adjusted RPI Rank)
    (.5665, #45; .5677, #47)

With the sweep of Western Kentucky (which helped the Cajun RPI), Florida Atlantic is now ...
    (.5724, #39; .5724, #40)

Western Kentucky has fallen to ...
    (.5799, #30; .5859, #27)

If the season ended today, assuming the typical # of conference tournament upsets I would have the following Sun Belt schools in the postseason ...

#2 seed Western Kentucky (RPI Rank #27)
#3 seed South Alabama (taken as Sun Belt champion) (RPI Rank 56)
#3 seed Florida Atlantic (RPI Rank 40)

One notable development ... Arkansas State is falling in the RPI. They are now at (.5425, #70; .5407, #75). The Cajuns have much separation from Arkansas State with respect to the RPI. Thus, I believe based on past selections, Arkansas State would be eliminated from the selection process before UL (if the season were complete). In fact, if Arkansas State were to drop one more spot, they would not even be on the initial selection board (unless they were a conference regular season champion).

Neither Florida International nor Middle Tennessee have the RPI either at this point ...

    Florida International
    (.5509, #65; .5509, #66)

    Middle Tennessee
    (.5408, #73; .5408, #74)

On even a more positive note, ULM helped the Cajuns by defeating USA and closing the gap between 1st and 7th.

Their are only 3 games seperating 1st and 7th place in the conferece, the Cajuns need to continue to win both in and out of conference games and move up in the SBC and the RPI standings.

    USA 13-5
    ASU 11-4
    FAU 12-6
    MT 11-7
    WKU 9-6
    FIU 9-6
    UL 10-8
    Troy 5-10
    ULM 4-11
    UALR 4-11
    UNO 2-16

With UNO and ULM still left in conference play, as well as Middle and WKU, the Cajuns have a very good chance to move up the conference ladder and get themselves in good position to make it interesting.

We don't play a conference game this next weekend, so let the others gain losses this weekend in conference.

Check out the link. Northwestern has won their last two series. They are on a tear themselves. This is good for the Cajun RPI.

The RPI rank did not move after Sunday's game. However, some teams above and below the Cajuns switched positions.

Appalachian State, Louisiana, and Texas State are right on top of each other in the Adjusted RPI ... a mere .0001 separates each team.

This is a situation where the RPI I use deviates slightly from Boyd Nation's Pseudo-RPI (Boyd does not count ties, whereas the NCAA does).

    Adjusted RPI
    #46 Appalachian State .5693
    #47 Louisiana .5692
    #48 Texas State .5691

Good info, Brian. Now go out and shoot a 70!
    #46 Appalachian State .5693

Minor adjustment to above after yesterday's limited schedule ... Appalachian State's Adjusted RPI moves to .5694.

Cajuns move up to #45 in the Adjusted RPI after last night. Western Kentucky moves to #23 and Florida Atlantic to #37.

(Base RPI, Base RPI Rank; Adjusted RPI, Adjusted RPI Rank)
    (.5695, #44; .5707, #45)

    Adjusted RPI
    #37 .5778 Florida Atlantic
    #38 .5752 San Diego
    #39 .5750 Texas Tech
    #40 .5748 Kansas
    #41 .5731 Mississippi State
    #42 .5730 Rutgers
    #43 .5713 Southeastern Louisiana
    #44 .5710 College of Charleston
    #45 .5707 Louisiana
    #46 .5696 Virginia Tech
    #47 .5696 Texas State
    #48 .5686 Pittsburgh
    #49 .5676 Appalachian State
    #50 .5675 Liberty
    #51 .5644 Long Beach State

The 43->47 spots are rather jammed together ... and in general, the 40's are tight.

Unfortunately, LeMoyne comes in this weekend at #171 in the Adjusted RPI (21-21 overall). The Cajuns will not suffer an RPI penalty if they drop a game (provided LeMoyne has a Base RPI rank of 226 or higher at selection time ... currently also #171). But a loss will drop the Cajuns' RPI and likely the RPI rank as well.

It would be helpful for the Cajuns to have McNeese State pull back into the Base RPI Top 100 (currently at #110) as this would help the Cajuns record against the RPI Top 100.
