Partly because many "University ofs" are also the State's Ag college, though some "States" are also the primary University in their state [The Ohio State University, for example].

Well as one of the newest members one would think we rose to that point, are any of the old members at a point where if they were current applicants they might not make it?

To which entity are you referring? R1 status is determined by set objective criteria so if a school no longer meets the criteria they will no longer be classified as R1.

AAU also has minimum criteria but even if that is met the school might not be voted in.

He got us to an SBC championship game and won 10 games in this whacky era of CFB. What are we going to do? Let his deal run out and hope a conference mate hires him away?

Our yeast was bad today.

I get the reasoning for the extension, but with one game, you’ve extended a coach who has 2 out of 3 losing seasons, won a single divisional title, lost 3 straight bowl games and absolutely smoked in his last 2 games. Excuses abound, but horrible optics. Timing is everything.

I get the reasoning for the extension, but with one game, you’ve extended a coach who has 2 out of 3 losing seasons, won a single divisional title, lost 3 straight bowl games and absolutely smoked in his last 2 games. Excuses abound, but horrible optics. Timing is everything.

Well yeah you could let him try to recruit HS kids and the portal as a lame duck coach. Zero chance he succeeds in that situation. You need your admin to commit to your coach so your roster will too. All it means is he gets paid if let go. That’s college sports these days.
