Per USN&WR, in 2024 there were 2,832 public 4-year universities. There are only 146 (39 private - 107 public) universities that are R1 and the 71 AAU universities are certainly in that 146 number (32 private - 39 public). Of the 107 public universities, 39 are AAU, so that makes UL one of the remaining 66 R1 public universities. Not AAU status, but elite none the less.

AAU - only 71 schools qualify. Tulane is the only AAU university in Louisiana. All BIG 10 schools are AAU, I believe a requirement for membership.
