In today's college sports, 5 years seems like an awful long time.

Are there bigger schools than R1?

AAU - only 71 schools qualify. Tulane is the only AAU university in Louisiana. All BIG 10 schools are AAU, I believe a requirement for membership.

Unless they have internal criteria, it doesn't look like there is a threshold checkbox for entry other than perception.

Because for many leaders in government, its easy to spend other peoples money. To be fair throughout college football, the culture in recent years is going overboard giving long term contracts to coaches. Taxpayers and donors are paying for it. Having said that tacking another year onto Coach Des' contract in recognition of his successful 2024 season is appropriate and deserving. A three year extension in exchange for one successful season seems like an overreaction in any sport. Just tack on one or two years, then more upon winning the conference, make the CFP, etc.
