None, because the other big sports here (Football, Baseball, Softball) regularly compete against and beat top teams and NO coach in those sports would have lasted as long as Marlin did. It’s amazing to me how we lowered our expectations in basketball. I think after so many probation scandals etc...post Jessie Evans some were just happy to have a clean program that could occasionally win conference.
Sorry for having higher expectations as a fan and alum.
I'm no Marlin apologist, but being a lame duck for another 90 days is no good for anyone nor the program. Time to look forward, plan for the rebuilding of mens basketball.
I’ll be there today along with my family.
As for Marlin’s decision to leave now, can you blame the guy? If it’s true that there would be no buyout if he chose to retire at the end of the year knowing that the school wanted him gone, why would he stay another 6 months? He just figured to get it over with now, and he gets paid doing it. I can’t really blame him for that
People get too wrapped up in the term buyout. The money is the same either way, buyout is just the remaining amount. But yes most people would rather have the money and not work the extra time. Or as a govt employee he likely could have stayed on and been on leave and got the same amount as well. He probably had enough time saved up. In the military we called that terminal leave.
There is no personal agenda against Marlin. It’s not like people suddenly woke up one day and said “You know what? I don’t like Bob.” It’s the job of the coach and program to give fans a reason to show up and support, but 15 years of mediocrity and losing by 29 at home to 4-5 Lamar only motivates people to make up their own minds on how they support the program.
Maggard realized the fans spoke loud enough to not show up which is why the decision was made the other day.
