Louisiana’s Ragin’ Cajuns softball team rattled off 14 hits in an 11-1 rout of McNeese State in Lake Charles, La. on Wednesday evening. Every Cajun that stepped into the batter’s box recorded a hit in the contest.
With the win the Cajuns are now 25-14 this season.
In the first inning, lead-off batter Erikka Murphy drew a walk, stole second and advanced to third on an errant throw by the Cowgirls on the steal attempt. An RBI-single by Christi Orgeron allowed Murphy to claim a 1-0 lead.
Murphy posted a RBI-single of her own with two outs in the second inning, scoring Kelly Cormier from third. Murphy would reach third after a passed ball. Melissa Verde kept the runs coming with a double to left centerfield, giving the Cajuns a 3-0 lead after the top of the second inning.
The Cajuns’ would stall over the next three innings, stranding four runners, three of which were in scoring position.
But Brittany Cuevas was able to keep the Cowgirls in check. Through five innings, the senior hurler struck out seven and allowed just one hit.
Two errors by McNeese and sacrifice fly by Orgeron in the top of the sixth plated two runs for the Cajuns in the top of the sixth.
Back-to-back doubles by Gabriele Bridges and Lana Bowers sparked a seventh-inning surge with the Cajuns scoring six runs on six hits.
The Cowgirls would spoil the shutout in the bottom of the seventh scoring one run on three hits.
Cuevas improves to 12-6 this season. She allowed just four hits while fanning nine Cowgirls on the evening.
The Cajuns will jump back into Sun Belt action this weekend at Lamson Park. South Alabama heads to Lafayette for a three-game series, starting with a doubleheader on Saturday. First pitch is set for 2 p.m. CT.
