Edit: my bad- I see the other black and gold school in the SBC plays at another "The Rock". It makes more sense there since they are in a mountainous area

USM's stadium isn't named 'The Rock' for the height. When it was built, the school had a great idea: Let's hire the FB team for construction!

The work turned out to be so tough, the team called it 'Alcatraz.'

Hence, 'The Rock.'
