So if the courts are saying it’s unconstitutional to restrict their ability to earn a living, doesn’t that eliminate them from being “student athletes” but professional athletes “earning a living” instead?
If that’s the case, they should be made to sign legitimate contracts that specifically detail what is and what is not required for them to get paid. Let’s use the NFL model and add salary caps, etc. The NCAA is no longer a useful organization, its time to come clean and admit that college football and basketball (others to follow) are now professional minor league franchises.

But it’s not a contract like a pro player, it would be the same thing as saying pro players can’t get paid through endorsement deals. Or at least that was the original intent of NIL.

Great point. They are paid (and unrestricted) via endorsement deals, not for playing. Ergo their name, image and likeness cant be restricted but their playing could be

I’m actually starting to fall into this camp. Can’t believe I am saying this.

But it’s not the university paying them, which would make them employees and require a players union. It’s collectives gathering money from donors. Things would actually be more controllable if they became employees of universities, because they could then be traded and schools could be compensated for losing guys, like the pros.

The problem is they have offers before they even enter the portal. Did you not see Coach Des post game remarks about this?
