It was 1 bad half, but it was critically bad with the opportunity we had in front of us. All is not lost, though.
We had not seen it this year, but those are the types of games Des teams lose. They get punched in the mouth, mount a comeback then fall short. Look at the 1 score game record. A lot of playing from behind. The Georgia state game from last year is a stand out example. So similar to yesterday.
This year, we have lived mostly off of getting a lead and protecting it. Outside of the Tulane game, we had never been down by more than 7.
Losing to a team you are better than takes multiple failures. Team came out flat, we made some poor choices from a coaching standpoint, and had terrible execution on both sides in the first half. I’m disappointed our run ended and Fields deserved to win that game on sheer dedication to his team. But deserves has nothing to do with it. Hopefully everyone involved learns and improves from that 1st half. A great season is still on the board.
There were a lot of things that cost us the game last night but what I think cost us the most last night was the opening drive of the half. Going down and taking 8.5 minutes off the clock (30% of time remaining) down 3 possessions and kicking a fg to remain down 3 possessions absolutely killed us.
Not to mention play calling once they got 1st and goal was horrendous. 1st down a QB sweep (why did we run this so many damn times? He's not even a good runner) with Chandler, 2nd down a pass in flat gaining nothing, and then incomplete on 3rd down
Wow . . . failing to take points in the first half had the naggers out in full force, now taking points I. The second half cost us the game . . . It’s what you see here, nag, nag, nag . . . The Ragin Naggers out in full force . . . never fricking satisfied about a ____ing thing . . .
This is our best chance to have a great season. We have experienced Quarterbacks, good running backs, a senior laden line, and a great kicker. We need to take advantage of this. We will have a young team next year.
