Thread: Cost to ESPN

    Default Cost to ESPN

Curious as to the total cost to ESPN to broadcast a Louisiana football game. Also, does anybody have the viewership numbers for these broadcasts?

Are sideline reporters really necessary? I bet that could cut cost

You talking all ESPN , not plus right? That's really a streaming service...
I had access to a great website for those numbers last year, will try to find it...

I’m just curious about the economics for ESPN. I don’t see how they even cover their cost for Sunbelt games, much less all these division two and three games that they carry.

I thought the schools provided the feed to ESPN.... ?

That's why I am curious about viewership. I'm sure they are making money. But, how many people are watching that Div. III matchup? I don't understand how ESPN can get enough in advertising to cover the costs of broadcasting that game.

They don’t, the school broadcast the games at zero cost to ESPN. ESPN pays the universities for the rights to those broadcasts.

So, Louisiana is paying the costs of broadcasting?

Hamburger and steak..you make huge $ from your stake games so you don't loose on the hamburger games...

Even if a game on the national platform like DivII, nationally that game may deliver a national half point...Ad agency buys the half point for a cost per pont of $30000.. that's 15 k x 25 commercials in a game = Gross revenue.

Remember a rating is a % of all the Cable TV/Subscribers in the country...it's millions

Share is a % of viewers currently viewing the game on cable or subscription

Does espn keep track of (or know) who is the primary team a subscriber is interested in when they first sign up for espn +?

Curious! If ESPN pays the college for the "feed", does the Sun Belt get any of this payment?

Except, a Div II game is not going to generate anywhere close to even a half point. I would be surprised if more than 10,000 people are watching that level of competition. Which is probably more like .001 per cent... that's not meant to be a precise number... for illustrative purposes only.

The thirtieth most waatched college game had 30-35,000 viewers and those are Div 1 teams.

SBC gets the payment and then it gets distributed. Not exactly sure of the breakdown though.

Its part of the ESPN conference agreement.

Play on Tuesday Wednesday, Thursday and 11am on Saturday, film it and we (ESPN) will give the conference $175,000 per all games on your behalf.
